Publisher's Message

When I began reading The Catholic Sentinel, the Rev. Edmond Bliven was the editor. His mark was tangible: traditional news with an aura of spirituality and humanity. With the establishment of Oregon Catholic Journal, we honor Bliven’s legacy.

Our name is an homage to another newspaper lost in time: The Oregon Journal. We miss it, as we dearly miss The Sentinel.

We begin our newspaper by covering compelling elements of Catholic life: events, obituaries in remembrance of family and friends, and job announcements. Brief news articles about our local church community will bring “Good News.” Editorials might prompt critical thinking and good works as we continue a heritage of newspaper publishing and Catholic faith traditions.

Welcome to Oregon Catholic Journal.

From the Editor

For more than 155 years, The Catholic Sentinel, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland, offered readers information about parish events, job openings and, so importantly, notices of community members who had passed away. The archdiocese discontinued The Sentinel in 2022.

Since then, many of the faithful from different parishes throughout Western Oregon have been frustrated trying to fill in these gaps on their own.

Because we believe firmly that community requires communication, the Oregon Catholic Journal is our effort to serve the Catholics of Western Oregon.
