In a campaign named "Pope Leo Village," Habitat for Humanity Portland Region will receive funding to build 17 affordable homes in the southwest Portland Markham neighborhood. Habitat Portland Region is one of 16 Habitat affiliates throughout the nation receiving funding from an anonymous donor, inspired by Pope Leo XIV.
The campaign will operate from January 2026 through the anticipated completion in 2027. The need is great.
"Home prices over the last 10 years have increased seven times more than individuals' incomes," said Steve Messinetti, president and CEO of Habitat's Portland region. "The result is that most renters are now paying more than half their incomes on housing. As more of our neighbors are struggling to find an affordable place to call home, we call on our community to work alongside one another to build a stronger Portland region. This is what the Pope Leo Village campaign is all about."
The Pope Leo Village campaign goals are to build relationships, strengthen community and create more opportunities for affordable home ownership. Individuals and groups are invited to volunteer at build sites and ReStores, Habitat's commercial resell stores.
As an interfaith nonprofit, Habitat recruits volunteer and financial support from youth groups, schools and congregations. Donations will fund the Pope Leo Village campaign.
When a homebuyer applicant is approved, Habitat offers an affordable mortgage. Homebuyers complete homeowner education classes and work alongside staff and volunteers during construction. Volunteers and donors are encouraged to contact Habitat about the Pope Leo Village campaign.
